Victory Presto Card

This Presto card, used to pay for public transportation, had its own minimalistic design when I acquired it, but I wanted to paint in a way that would make it reflect my personality while still complimenting the original design. I love history and I'm known for being over the top and detail-oriented, so painting a very detailed image of an ancient victory statue seemed fitting. I chose to do it in black and white paint only, so that it would match the palette of the card. I worked with the negative space and elements of the original design to make my addition flow through them, creating a cohesive and aesthetically pleasing design with the illusion of depth.

"Salem" Linocut

Meet Salem, the half-skeletal cat. I sketched the two sides of the face and used a digital tool to edit an image of my drawings so that the sides aligned with each other as well as possible. The edited image was printed and traced onto a linoleum floor tile, which I hand carved and cut to form the final stamp or 'linocut'. I used a roller to distribute ink across the surface and pressed my piece against paper to form prints, one of which you see here.

The moon on its forehead was added to boost its spooky, "witchy" overall look.

Starry Night Nails

As my eccentric makeup artistry suggests, I love adorning myself with works of art. Nail art is quite popular, so putting art on my nails was an obvious option for me to explore. I challenged myself to create my own miniature masterpiece, copying one of the most well known paintings of all time: Van Gogh's Starry Night. Using a very small brush and acrylic paint over a base of dark blue nail polish, I recreated the iconic blue and yellow swirling sky and landscape below. A top coat of clear nail polish was used to seal the design so that the paint would not wash off.

"Pals" Medallion

Pals is a digitally sculpted 3D medallion of a pair of friends - a draft horse with a thick, fuzzy winter coat and a shorthaired cat who's cuddling up to him. A medallion is a sculpture with a flat back and one three-dimensional side. I used the app Nomad Sculpt on my iPad pro to create this piece; every strand of hair was sculpted in by hand with a stylus. This work is an exploration of textures - from the skin wrinkling, to the different types of hair, to the woodgrain, each element provided an opportunity to try something new and discover new techniques. I am still relatively new to digital sculpture, but through projects like this, I learn a lot through trial and error, and come out a better, more experienced artist.
